Dress Code

Visitors to Ise Jingu are expected to dress appropriately. Avoid clothing that is too revealing or overly flashy. Aim for modest and respectful attire.

Photography

Photography should be kept to a minimum and only in permitted areas. Avoid using flash and loud shutter sounds.

(I personally refrained from taking any photographs inside the shrine.)

Significance and Etiquette of Worship

When visiting Ise Jingu, observe the following etiquette:

Purification at the Temizusya

Before worship, cleanse your hands at the temizusya (purification fountain). This act shows respect for the sacred site.

Steps:

  1. Use the ladle to scoop water and pour it over each hand.
  2. Pour some water into your hand to rinse your mouth.
  3. Hold the ladle vertically to let the remaining water rinse the handle, then return the ladle.
  4. Dry your hands with a clean towel or handkerchief.

Worship Method

  1. When passing through the torii gate, avoid the center as it is considered the path of the gods. Walk on the left side.
  2. Perform two bows, two claps (with the right hand slightly lower than the left), and one final bow. Offer your silent prayers and bow again.
  3. Exit by walking on the left side.

Note: Always be considerate of others and maintain deep respect during your visit.

Intentions in Worship

Visiting Ise Jingu is a meaningful act to convey gratitude and wishes to the deities. Calm your mind and focus on your intentions.

While it is common to make wishes, I personally choose to only express gratitude during my visits.

 Mikakiuchi Sanpai

Those who have made donations at Naiku are allowed to participate in Mikakiuchi Sanpai, a special form of worship that requires particular attention.

Conclusion

Visiting Ise Jingu is a special experience. By observing the correct etiquette and being mindful of the important aspects of worship, you can have a deeply spiritual visit. Approach your visit with a pure heart and respect, and you will gain a profound spiritual experience.
